Spreading the BD load – Without turning creatives into salespeople

I’m very proud that I was the first guest on the super-successful Marketing Momentum for Agencies Podcast hosted by Tracey Burnett, all the way back in March 2025.

Eighty-something episodes later, she asked me back.

Last time, we talked about agency growth. This time, we focused on commercial skills.

In our conversation, we explored:

  • Why business development shouldn’t depend on one person.

  • How creatives can contribute commercially – without becoming salespeople.

  • Why the right contribution should be matched to someone’s strengths, role and seniority.

  • How to use the 70:20:10 model, blending on-the-job experience, internal development and external training.

  • How to keep business development moving during periods of heavy client delivery work.

  • Practical ways leaders can start involving their team members today.

My training is designed for agency and consultancy practitioners moving into more senior roles with business development responsibilities.

It combines an entrepreneurial mindset with practical techniques that build confidence – empowering more people to play a direct role in generating revenue.

The programme consists of five courses covering the typical process of winning work:

  1. Growing your network – for lead generation

  2. Qualifying new opportunities – assessing how much to invest and increasing your chances of winning

  3. Running creds meetings – preparing, running and following up

  4. Negotiating with clients – not just over money

  5. Turning losing into winning – how to persevere if unsuccessful

The training can be delivered live, through online videos, or as a hybrid combination of both.
